There is a lot of buzz these days about switching to organic foods but does it really make that big of a difference?
Like you, I'm a busy mom who wants the very best for my children. I have to admit before I became a mom, I didn't give the source of the foods I ate much consideration. My idea of organic foods was tofu, granola and dry soy "burgers", all of which I avoided. Everything I ate was purchased from the local super market.
I just assumed that the food that made it onto the store shelves was fine and perfectly harmless.
Especially the fresh foods, like produce, meats and dairy. My thinking, and my buying habits didn't change until I had children. And boy have they changed!
A little education has gone a long way towards convincing me that I must buy organic foods for the sake of myself and my family's health and wellbeing.
Times have changed. There are some very unsettling things happening to mass produced foods and just buying "off the shelf" often introduces chemicals and other toxic ingredients that have no nutritional value, and many should not be allowed in the human (or animal!) food supply. As moms we need reliable, accurate information to make the best choices about the foods we feed to our kids.
And some things haven't changed much. Like the chemical pesticides that get sprayed into fruit, vegetable and animal grain crops. DDT is no longer in use of course, but many toxic chemicals are still used in abundance.
We moms need to understand why organic foods are different and better for our children - and worth spending more for, especially in their early years. The best way to do that is to ask questions about the foods that are being mass-produced for us now.
Questions like:
What is the official definition of organic?
Are there really excessive amounts of pesticides on conventionally grown produce?
What is genetic modification, and why are GM foods being called "frankenfoods"?
Why aren't GM foods labeled?
What is in sewage sludge fertilizer?
What is the purpose of food irradiation?
How can you tell what foods are irradiated?
What are Factory Farms? Why are livestock injected with antibiotics and hormones?
Do the hormones and antibiotics used in livestock end up on my dinner table?
What steps are being taken to prevent Mad Cow Disease contamination in U.S. beef?
What FDA approved food additives might be damaging my family's health?
