Tracy Austin - The Organic Foods Mom

I'm Tracy Austin, a WAHM (work at home mom) to a 5 year-old daughter and a 2 year-old son. I'm building this web site to share what I'm learning about mass produced food, and why organic food is so important to children's health.

To everyone's health really, but rapidly growing children are much more susceptible to suffering ill-effects from foreign chemicals and other additives in their food.

I started researching organics in 2005. For me this means surfing the Internet in the wee hours. As a WAHM, I have the luxury of choosing work over sleep some nights.

I was originally looking for a dietary supplement or something to help me to feel more energetic to keep up with my little ones. I started reading about nutrition, and how eating organic foods is so much healthier.

Being from New England, I have this inability to just take someone's word that something is better for me. I needed proof they are better before I would switch to organic foods.

I spent hours searching the Internet for enough information to convince myself that organic foods are what I want to eat myself, and feed to my family. I had a ton of questions and a burning desire not only to provide the most nutritious foods as possible for my family and myself but to also find a way to become a WAHM.

That was the start of what has become a sheer joy for me. Creating this website from home, while I raise my own children. I found a way to work at home just in time for our family, financially.

I realized that the reasons I am changing over to as much organic food as I can didn't just fall into my lap. It took time to come to that conclusion, and if I can help other mothers do the same, and raise healthier and happier kids for it, then building this web site is time well spent.

When I began to realize the truth about our food supply, I became an evangelist! I needed to know, and more importantly, share with as many other moms as possible, what contaminants, additives and chemicals are allowed in/on our foods, and how we can reduce and sometimes avoid them by making different food choices.

Even some that make nutritionally void foods taste better than they really are, which can make us crave them. Those nice ads that make you feel all warm and fuzzy about foods are brainwashing our kids to beg us to put these non-foods in our carts! And sometimes we do because we just don't have any idea that a food can cause so much trouble.

Trouble ranging from intensified tantrums and mild to severe allergic reactions, to actual brain cell death and brain damage. The tantrums or allergic reactions are obvious, but the brain damage is (usually) subtle, and therefore goes unnoticed in the moment. Unfortunately it can take years for the effects of consuming these non-foods on a regular basis to show up.

Plus, these chemicals dull our children's taste buds so that real, whole foods are no longer satisfying. Alas, this is exactly what the mass producers of "food" are in business to achieve in order to keep us buying their products.

It's all legal and, with the exception of genetically modified items, listed on the ingredient labels. We still have no mandatory labeling laws here in the U.S to inform us of genetically modified ingredients.

It's up to us to educate ourselves so we know what we and our kids are eating, and why we and our children might actually be addicted to certain junk non-"foods" to the point of endangering our health.

Understanding what foods are bad for us and why is fairly simple. GM foods are another story, and I urge you to get your hands on a copy of the book Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies About the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You're Eating so you understand why genetically modified foods should not - according to many well-respected scientists and others - be in our food supply, or on your dinner table.

Thanks for being here and please tell the other moms and WAHM's you know about this web site. Use the form below to contact me about anything regarding organic foods or becoming a work at home mom.
